Foods to avoid (high purines):
- Organ foods such as: Liver, kidneys, tripe, heart, tongue, etc.
- Excessive amounts of red meats and poultry
- Shellfish, mussels, anchovies, fish roe, herring, mackerel, sardines, shrimps and scallops
- Peas, legumes, spinach, lentils and beans
- Yeast
- Mushrooms
- Asparagus
- Gravy
- Alcohol intake should at least be reduced (beer and wine, especially)
Foods beneficial (low purines):
- Raw fruits (cherries, strawberries, pineapple, oranges are rich in Vit. C and are excellent)
- Vegetables (anything besides those mentioned above)
- Grains
- Seeds and nuts
- White bread/crackers (not whole wheat)
- Cereal and cereal products – but caution because some cereals are fortified with iron and worsen gout.
- Cheese (all kinds)
In addition to a low purine diet, maintain an appropriate weight to height ratio avoid excessive alcohol intake and increase your water intake daily.
